Planechase for Commander- Primordial Hunger

So my article on night of the ninja has recieved a lot of hits. I'm assuming that means I'm doing something right. So now I will continue this series with Primordial Hunger. I will follow the same rules as last time keeping the same count on rarity and keeping the land, creature, non creature/non land ratio the same as the origional deck. Let's get started:

Thromok the Insatiable- will lead our army. The theme in place is devour to the max. To add: 1 mythic, 5 Rares, 9 Uncommon, and 25 common cards. 16 land, 17 creatures, and 7 non creature non land.

Lands:
11  Forest
Gruul Turf
Kazandu Refuge
Khalni Garden
Mountain
Skarrg, the Rage Pits
Terramorphic Expanse

We need to replace 2 lands and add 16 more. 11 of those 16 will be basics so we will add 6 forests and 5 mountains.
Replace:
-1  Gruul Turf +1 Evolving Wilds
-1  Kazandu Refuge +1 Shivan Oasis

Add: 5
Dryad Arbor
Ghitu Encampment
Mountain Valley
Treetop Village
Raging Ravine

My main thought on land was that I wanted man lands to have the option of activating and devouring them also attacking with them can be useful too. Used 1 rare, 4 uncommon, 11 commons.

Creatures:
Beetleback Chief
Brindle Shoat
Dragonlair Spider
Gluttonous Slime
Hellkite Hatchling
Hissing Iguanar
Mitotic Slime
Mudbutton Torchrunner
Mycoloth
Nest Invader
Nullmage Advocate
Penumbra Spider
Preyseizer Dragon
Thorn-Thrash Viashino
Thromok the Insatiable
Thunder-Thrash Elder
Tukatongue Thallid
Viridian Emissary
Wall of Blossoms

We have a theme here of creatures that do something when they enter/leave the battlefield, token makers, and devourers.
Replace:
-1  Beetleback Chief +1 Rapacious One
-1  Brindle Shoat +1 Jade Mage
-1  Mudbutton Torchrunner +1 Emrakul's Hatcher
-1  Thunder-Thrash Elder +1 Lumberknot
-1  Tukatongue Thallid +1 Kozilek's Predator
-1  Viridian Emissary +1 Mogg War Marshal
Add:
Dragon Broodmother- is the mythic I want to run with. It fits the flavor of the deck encompasing both devour and token making.
Predator Dragon- Another devourer, this time taking up a rare slot.
Skullmulcher- just fits as another devourer.
Gorger Wurm- the last of the devour creatures we will add to the deck.
Ember-Fist Zubera - These 2 creatures replace themselves and deal damage when
Dripping-Tongue Zubera- they die. better when both are out, but ok when only 1 is.
Symbiotic Elf - gives more fodder when he dies.
Yavimaya Elder - good death effect, also can off himself if need be.
Young Wolf - Dies to get more aggressive
Howlgeist- undying is strong for this deck
Pyreheart Wolf- Im surprised there isn't more of it being used in this deck.
Goblin Sharpshooter- Respond to the massive amounts of triggers.
Tuktuk the Explorer- Theme is becoming, "Stike me down and I will become more powerful ..."
Ambassador Oak - Makes a token for us to kill
Symbiotic Beast- makes alot of tokens when he dies.
Cartographer- returns a dead man land to your hand, or the fetchland
Elvish Pioneer- early ramp
Anger- wants to be in the yard.

Others
Awakening Zone
Fiery Conclusion
Fires of Yavimaya
Flayer Husk
Fling
Fractured Powerstone
Hellion Eruption
Mark of Mutiny
Overrun
Warstorm Surge

Replace:
-1 Flayer Husk +1  Sylvok Lifestaff

Add:
Doubling Season- the most obvious card is still a good card to add to the deck
Skullclamp- almost as obvious, lotsa creature are dieing, drawing cards is good. Also lotsa tokens sitting around waiting to be cards in your hand.
Fists of Ironwood- give a beatstick trample while setting up for the next devour
Fecundity- our creatures die alot right?
Sprout Swarm- tokens over time
Brood Birthing- make a few tokens, can be used to ramp if needed
Haze of Rage- If you cant find anyone to feed the army of tokens to, just attack with them.

This concludes the cover of the primordial hunger deck. The deck looks like it would be alot of fun to play. I hope you all enjoyed it. Leave some feedback.

  1. Looks pretty solid even with the restrictions on mythic and rare counts. A very good starting deck for a new EDH player perhaps? And can definitely be powered up over time.

Props on finding a good use for Tuktuk; that one made me grin. Also, Fecundity is tech!

  2. Thanks, that is pretty much what I was going for.

I like Tuktuk. I meant to use him in the golem deck.
